Trucks himself stated that the album has a different feel to their other work because, in the past, he always felt under pressure to create a "guitar album". He maintains that the difference is that the band has had more time to mature and that the album's sound is more balanced between the different contributions of its members, who developed its overall effect as they arranged the songs recorded for the album.

The album received very positive reviews and won the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album, the band's first Grammy Award.

The first single, "Down in the Flood", features guest musicians Doyle Bramhall II, Susan Tedeschi, and Eric Krasno (of Soulive).
