Jack's Mannequin, Billy Talent, Dan Penn and Anouk
It's June, and that means two things: it's almost summer, and we're getting close to the first Record Store Day drop! But first, allow us to introduce you to this week's new vinyl releases.
First up: People and Things, the third and final album by American alternative rock band Jack's Mannequin. This album is loaded with notable guest musicians and received favourable reviews from music critics. Available now as a limited edition of 3000 individually numbered copies on orange coloured vinyl, including an insert.
Whether you're a long time Billy Talent fan or you just want to get to know the band in 14 songs, their first greatest hits compilation, simply called Hits, is the perfect addition to your record collection. This 2LP, full of epic punk rock songs, comes in a UV matte finished gatefold sleeve and contains a 4-page booklet as well as an art print by Ken Taylor.
Renowned songwriter Dan Penn had already written hit songs for singers like Conway Twitty and Aretha Franklin for years, before he finally picked up a guitar and started recording himself in 1994. The result is the stunning album Do Right Man, a southern soul gem that is now available as a limited edition of 1000 individually numbered copies on gold coloured vinyl.
Dutch singer Anouk released Sad Singalong Songs the day before she represented the Netherlands in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest with the album's lead single “Birds”. This introspective, symphonic rock ballad-oriented album is now available on coloured vinyl for the first time. It's a limited edition of 1000 individually numbered copies on clear vinyl and contains a printed innersleeve with song lyrics.
After four highly successful albums and two live albums, it was time for Canadian punk rockers Billy Talent to release their first greatest hits compilation in 2014, simply called Hits. The album contains 12 of the band's most popular singles, including “Try Honesty”, “Red Flag”, “Fallen Leaves”, “Devil on My Shoulder” and “Viking Death March”.
Jack's Mannequin is the side project of Andrew McMahon from pop punk band Something Corporate. Their final album, People and Things, was released in 2011. For People and Things, the band worked with some notable guest musicians.
Dan Penn has southern soul running through his veins. Penn started out in the early sixties as band leader of various soul combos in Alabama, but he remained out of the limelight for most of his career, instead choosing to write hit songs for other artists. In 1994 Dan finally picked up the guitar and recorded these songs himself for the first time and to great effect.
In 2013, Anouk was the Netherlands' representative in the Eurovision Song Contest. The day before competing in the first semi-final, she released Sad Singalong Songs, her eighth album. The album marked a change in sound for Anouk, containing more introspective, symphonic oriented rock ballads. Lead single “Birds” was the song she performed at Eurovision, ultimately placing 9th in the final; the best result for the Netherlands since 1999.
