The Sound of Music is the final collaboration between the composer Richard Rodgers and the lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II and one of their most famous collaborations. A lot of the songs from the musical have become standards, like "Edelweiss", "Do-Re-Mi" and "My Favorite Things". The story about the Austrian woman who is sent to a villa to be the governess of the Trapp Family during the second world war became known as a great Broadway production in 1959, winning different awards. The movie adaption from 1965 reached an even bigger audience and is even now as popular as ever. One of the reasons for its popularity are the sing-along tracks that are part of the fantastic soundtrack. Shortly after releasing the 1965 film musical Oscar Hammerstein died of cancer. But even now decades later the music lives on in the countless reproductions of the musical and the many artists who performed all this classic songs.
The musical, movie and soundtrack of The Sound of Music received many awards, including multiple Academy, Tony and Golden Globe Awards. The play also gained recognition by being listed in numerous top film lists all over the world.
