Francesco Tristano is a Luxembourg classical and experimental pianist and composer, who also plays the clarinet. He composes both classical and electronic music and has previously released his music on labels like Deutsche Grammophon, Get Physical and Transmat.
His 2007 album Not For Piano received rave reviews and features his own compositions as well as piano versions of Detroit anthems such as "The Bells" (Jeff Mills) or "Strings of Life" (Derrick May). A year later, with Auricle Bio On (2008), he introduced the sound of the piano and use it simultaneously as a sampler and synthesizer. With the release of Idiosynkrasia (2010) Francesco accomplished the synthesis of both languages; digital virtuosity and rare electronic textures, which he would claim as 'Piano 2.0'. Alongside with his career in electronic music, he has simultaneously continued to grow as a classical pianist with a repertoire half way between baroque (mainly Bach and before) and twentieth and twenty first century music, organizing his programs as if they were 'playlists', which is how he likes to define them.
Now in 2017 Francesco Tristano returns to his first passion with a selection of beautiful, newly composed works for solo piano. Piano Circle Songs features award-winning Canadian pianist and songwriter Chilly Gonzales on four of the tracks, of which Gonzales composed "Tryst" himself for the album. It was important for Francesco to capture the intimacy of the music in both the recording and the post- production phases. By purposefully placing mics close to the instrument, he wants the listener to experience the sensation of having 'their ear inside the piano'.
The album theme of 'circle' reflects the cyclical nature of the pieces themselves; many of the works follow ABA form or extended variations of this. Francesco also drew inspiration from a chance conversation with Chilly Gonzales and reflections on the behaviour of his children.
Francesco will perform the music from the album in concert this autumn in Berlin, Munich, London and Paris.
