Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars - MOVLP131

Fatboy Slim

"Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars" is Fatboy Slim's third album, and it is also this prolific dance producer's third release on Music On Vinyl. Here, Norman Cook continues the work he started on "Better Living Through Chemistry" (MOVLP111) and "You've Come A Long Way, Baby" (MOVLP099), bringing in collaborators Macy Gray, Bootsy Collins and Roger Sanchez, yet he steps away from the capricious commercial world of the pop charts in favor of the steady beat of the dance floor.

This album contains floor fillers such as Sunset (Bird Of Prey) (vocals by the late Jim Morrison), 'Star 69', a heavy four-to-the-floor acid-techno rampage (which was funnily enough removed entirely from the 'clean' version of the album), and the Big-Beat oriented 'Ya Mama', 'Weapon Of Choice' and 'Mad Flava'. Soulful Gospel track 'Demons' with Macy Gray on vocals is the true highlight of the album; it feels like sunrise on a beach the morning after a Dazed And Confused-like life-changing-all-summer-in-one-night-experiences.

"Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars" calls for closer listening than previous albums, but it will still make you dance around your house like Christopher Walken.
