"John Coltrane and Johnny Hartmann"is a 1963 studio album featuring John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman.
Coltrane and Hartman had known each other since their days playing with Dizzy Gillespie's band in the late 1940s, and Hartman is the only vocalist with whom the saxophonist would record as a leader. With McCoy Tyner on piano and Elvin Jones on drums, the songs of this album were recorded during a single session in Rudy Van Gelder's Englewood studios on March 7, 1963.
This recording also features "Lush Life", a last minute addition to the session after they heard Nat King Cole's rendition on the car radio on their way to the studio.
This version would become the definitive one, and it still sounds as poignant and piquant as it did forty years ago.
