This first YMO album was released in 1978 in Japan ('79 in Europe) and set a precedent in the music industry like never before. By releasing this daring album, YMO shook the world with their 'Synthpop', at the time a revelation as well as a revolution. Featuring the hit "Firecracker", an infectious and exotic Martin Denny cover, which became a staple in the early Hip Hop scene in New York.
YMO's second album Solid State Survivor was released in 1979, and represented numerous crossover tracks from Techno to New Wave.Solid State Survivor is probably the most sampled YMO album, as over the years several artists performed numerous covers of "Behind The Mask". This extremely popular album peaked at # 1 in several charts all over the world.
This is YMO's first live recorded album and their second number 1 album in Japan. Several concerts were recorded for Public Pressure, all in 1979. This album contains first class recordings, clear and sparkling; YMO is arguably at its best with an audience. Akiko Yano is a welcomed addition to YMO, as she completes the band with sublime vocals.
X∞ Multiplies was released as an EP in 1980. Now this album is something different! Filled with humor, catchy commercial tunes, instrumentals, computerized vocals and 2 versions of the Soul classic "Tighten up" by Archie Bell & The Drells, YMO took a break from their serious side and decided to have a go with a more poppy sound mixed with humor and fun.
NAUGHTY BOYS & INSTRUMENTAL
Naughty Boys (1983) was Yellow Magic Orchestra's seventh and final album to top the Japanese Oricon Pop charts. A remix album, Naughty Boys Instrumental was released in July 1983. It contained nearly the entire Naughty Boys album as instrumental tracks in an entirely different running order, as well as the b-side to "Kimi Ni Mune Kyun", "Chaos Panic"; and the full instrumental version of "You've Got to Help Yourself", of which the vocal track was included on Service[MOVLP1473].
Service was the eighth and, at the time, final studio album by Yellow Magic Orchestra. The band dissolved the following year after a world tour. Like ×-Multiplies [MOVLP1469], it contains a mixture of YMO songs and comedy sketches performed by Super Eccentric Theater, or S.E.T.Service features "You've Got to Help Yourself", which was previously featured in instrumental form on the previous album, Naughty Boys Instrumental [MOVLP1472].
On their 2nd live album, recorded during their 83-84 World Tour and released in 1984, again YMO succeeded in producing a live album with incredible audio quality. Vibrant, lively, energetic and infectious as ever, the crowds can't seem to get enough. Listen to this live album and you will want to go back in time to experience the brilliance yourself.
