On this record are classics such as "Nobody Knows When You're Down And Out", Billie Holiday's signature song "Strange Fruit", as well as a Nina Simone favorite: "Sinnerman". There are few songs that capture the Spirit of religion, redemption, and the fear of God as much as this ten-minute race of a song about a man trying to outrun the Devil.
Nina Simone never, ever disappoints.
Re-released for the first time on vinyl since 1965, we hope we do 'Pastel Blues'
justice.JOE COCKER - SHEFFIELD BLUES (1LP) – MOVLP540
Joe Cocker signed to Island Records in 1981 and they took him to the Bahamas where he recorded his 10th full length album: 'Sheffield Steel'
It was released a year later. Joe was accompanied by the Compass Point All-Stars, led by legendary session musicians Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. They supplied the steady tropical groove for most tracks.
The result was a successful album, which put Cocker's name back on the map.ART BLAKEY - DRUMSUITE (1LP) – MOVLP478
One of the inventors of the modern bebop style of drumming, Blakey is known as a powerful musician and a vital groover; his brand of bluesy, funky hard bop was and continues to be profoundly influential on mainstream jazz.
Recorded in 1956, Art Blakey's 'Drum Suite'
is a wonderful hybrid of African, Latin, and hard bop rhythms that prefigures the concept of Afro-beat by at least a decade. The sheer energy, not to mention its very special and fresh-sounding intimacy, make it especially astounding.
Groundbreaking for its time, and still sounding vital, powerful, and visionary, the 'Drum Suite'
album is a lost masterpiece that deserves a fresh audience.
